Palakura pappu (Spinach dal)

Ingredients:

  • Spinach, washed and shredded - 1 bunch
  • Toor dal - 1 cup
  • Tomato - chopped - 1
  • Onion - chopped - 1
  • Chilli powder - 1 tsp or
  • Green chillies - 3
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Tamarind - a quarter size
  • water - 1 glass

For Seasoning:

  • 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 dried red chilli pieces
  • ¼ tsp curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp hing

Method:

  1. Pressure cook the spinach, toor dal, tomato, onion along with chilli powder, turmeric and some water.
  2. Heat the oil in a tempering pan and lightly fry the seasoning ingredients - mustard seeds,cumin seeds, minced garlic, chana dal, urad dal, dried red chilli, curry leaves and hing.
  3. When the mustard seeds start sputtering, pour the seasoning over the cooked dal and mix well.
